Light a Candle – Shine a Light for Peace on January 8th
For many years on a Friday afternoon in early January, the Harborough Action for Justice and Peace Group, which is part of Churches Together, has organised a Peace Vigil on the Square, inviting people as daylight fades, to pause and stand silently for half an hour to reflect on and pray for world peace at the start of another year.
In 2021, we will not be able to gather in the town’s most public of spaces. However, the group would like to invite people in the area to light a candle, shine a torch or other source of light at home on Friday afternoon, January 8th between 17.00 – 17.30 and spend time reflecting on and praying for peace throughout our troubled world in silent vigil.
There are prayers and reflections offered for your use here: Peace Vigil 2021.
One such statement about peace was made by Saint Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador who was assassinated as he celebrated Mass in 1980. He said, “Peace is not the product of terror or fear. Peace is not the silence of cemeteries. Peace is not the result of violent oppression. Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism. Peace is generosity. It is a right and a duty.”
Please join with us in this simple act.
